What this book does

Built on your numbers

Every club recommendation comes from the distances on the next page. Change those and the book changes with them. Nothing here assumes a good day or a bad one — it is the same plan every time you play.

Keep it in play

A tour player attacks flags. You score by staying in play. Every green in this book names the side that is still in play and the side that is gone — pick one before you swing, not after.

How to read it
Two pages
per hole
The hole
Rings
100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 from your tee box.
Dots
Mapped trees. The gap between them is printed below.
Arrow
North. Read the day's wind against it.
Strip
Tee club, sand carry, tree gap.
The green
F/M/B
Front, middle, back yardages from the tee.
View
Oriented from your approach — up the page is long.
Red arrow
Which way the green falls, with the slope percentage.
In play
The side with no hazard. Miss there.

Where the slope comes from

Every green was sampled on a grid against 1-metre LiDAR elevation. The arrow is a plane fitted to those points — a measured average tilt, not a drawing. It will not show small internal rolls, so treat it as the dominant fall and read the last six feet yourself.

Who it is for

Built for a mid-handicap player. Nothing here asks for a shot you do not have. When the book says lay up, it is because the layup scores better — not because it is safer.

To confirm

Card yardages are the official Blue plates. Greens 2 and 5 are mapped as one shape, so their depths are marked *.

Layup targets

128 · 92. Every layup in this book aims at one of these.

Carry vs total

Totals decide layups. Carries decide whether you clear the sand. Carry numbers are measured from your tee box to the near and far edge of the bunker.

Keep these current

These are stated totals, not launch-monitor numbers. Every recommendation in this book is derived from them — if they change, regenerate the book rather than adjusting in your head on the tee.

Local knowledge
Turf & conditions

Bentgrass greens

CCSF putts on bentgrass — fine, vertical, cool-season, and with almost no grain. What you see is what you get. Trust the line, play more break than instinct says, and obsess over speed: on fast bent, two feet long becomes four feet past.

Time of day

Morning: dew, slower — add pace on the first three holes. Midday is your reference speed. Afternoon: fastest and footprinted — hit short putts firmly, especially late, when poa seed heads make the surface bumpy.

Chipping off cool-season turf

Bluegrass and rye sit the ball up on a cushion that invites the thin-fat miss. Ball slightly back, hands ahead, hit the small ball first. Expect less spin and more roll than the lie suggests.

Local knowledge
Playing it

Club order around the greens

Putter any time the front is open. Then the 9 iron bump — land a third of the way, let it release. The 52° only when you must carry something. The 56° flop only when short-sided — and the book already told you not to be.

River bottom ground

This course sits in the Big Sioux river bottom. After rain it plays soft — approaches stop, chips check, no run. Firm and dry, the opposite. Check the first fairway you walk on and calibrate for the day.

Bunkers and cottonwoods

Sand here runs heavier and wetter than the fluffy stuff further south — shallower cut, ball comes out lower and runs. The cottonwoods block low recoveries more than high ones; behind one, the honest shot is usually sideways.

How these were measured

A 5×5 grid was sampled on every green against 1-metre USGS LiDAR and a plane fitted to the points. Slope is the tilt of that plane; falls is its downhill direction from your approach. Greens whose fit failed the quality gate are dashed, never guessed.
